5 Self-Care Tips for Busy Solopreneurs


Most working people clock in a nine to five workday averaging about 40 hours a week. But what about small business owners and solopreneurs? We don’t hear much about their work habits because they typically work much more.

Solopreneurs tend to work around the clock and every day of the week. Why is this? Because you wear every hat in the business. The solopreneur is the sales and development department, the bookkeeping team, the marketing team, and the coffee runner. Eventually, the hats start to feel heavy.

That's why practicing self-care is super important in your solopreneur life. The goal of self-care isn’t to work less, it’s to help you avoid total burnout.

Here are five solopreneur self-care tips you can put into practice.

1. Create The Extra Time

Does it feel like you say ‘if I only had more hours in the day’ regularly? The problem isn’t really finding new hours, it’s creating time and space for the existing ones.

You don’t have to cancel two-hour blocks of time to experience a little self-care in your day.

Take a look at your daily schedule. Find a few places where you can take a walk, read a book, call a friend, or even take a micro-nap (it’s a thing!).

Making the effort to schedule your ‘break time’ means you are prioritizing yourself in your life. This is precisely what it’s all about. Recharge and take charge. You’ll see the benefits, I promise.

2. Get Good Sleep

If you regularly get four to six hours of sleep, you may be physically and mentally unable to carry the load of your successful business.

Studies show that sleep and mood are connected. The less you sleep, the worse you’ll feel, and the less you want to put in the work. Add this to the many layers of life; family, friends, extracurriculars, and you’re headed for burnout.

Aim for at least seven hours of sleep or more, each night. I say this as my own children are rioting against bedtime as we speak.

 If you can’t commit, try scheduling a nap. You are a solopreneur and making your own schedule is a major benefit!

Be sure the quality of sleep you’re getting is good too. Stay away from electronics an hour before bed and wind down with a book with real pages. Routinely go to bed at the same time nearly every night. 

Turn your thermostat to somewhere between 60 and 67 degrees, this is the optimal sleeping temperature!

3. Get Your Heart Pumping

Our doctors and trainers tell us all the time: 30 minutes of exercise can make all the difference in how we feel, work and go through life. 

When you’re a busy solopreneur you only have yourself to lean on. Making sure your body is operating at optimum performance is vital to your business. 

Not everyone can slip away to the gym or head out to their favorite yoga class every day, I get that. That’s why creating realistic goals (we see this a lot!) is key.  Schedule 15 minutes of walking, stair climbing, or bodyweight exercises 3 days a week to start and go up from there.

4. Say No

As a solopreneur, you're a go-getter who stops at nothing to achieve your goals right?

I’m high-fiving you right now because you’re awesome. But, just remember you’re human and you have limits and boundaries.

Give yourself a ‘no-goal’. Intentionally decide what you will say no to in a week. If it’s something spur of the moment, take a deep breath before you answer. Being caught off guard usually results in a hurried ‘yes’.

By saying ‘no’, you’ve given yourself the ‘yes’ you need to focus on you.

5. Give Yourself Grace

Taking time for self-care doesn’t mean being perfect. You’re going to fail, you’re going to get feedback, and you’re going to stumble along the way. 

That’s ok. It happens to every single human being on this earth. 

Give yourself the Grace to brush your shoulders off and try again tomorrow. 

Don’t ever feel guilty for prioritizing yourself.
